What is a water filter cartridge? 

Cartridge filters are one of the most preferred filtration products for removing sediments and particles from water supplies. These suspended solids increase in concentration throughout water sources from many instances in life, such as stormwater runoff and rotting pipes that can leave debris in water. These water bodies eventually become discolored and unappealing which make them unable to be used in households and businesses.

Unwanted occurrences are significantly more likely to arise on equipment, such as clogging and degradation of water heaters, coolers, shower fixtures, valves, including reduction of system performance. Reverse osmosis systems and UV sterilizers require clean water in order to operate efficiently. For this reason, water treatment operators frequently utilize cartridge filters to ensure clean water is being used throughout the water filtration process. 

Rainwater can also transfer soil, sand, silt, and clay into groundwater supplies, which can be transported through water mains into your residence. How does the cartridge filter process look like?

Reverse Osmosis Systems

RO systems are most efficient in further purifying water that have already been pre-filtered. These systems utilize semipermeable membranes that remove a wide range of contaminants that cartridge filters are unable to filter (mentioned in the previous section). Sediments and particles become hazardous to reverse osmosis systems due to being rejection by the RO membranes. Once they are rejected and discharged down a small flow restrictor. Issues of clogging can arise rather quickly, which harms the overall pressure that the system is capable to produce and ultimately decreases the recovery ratio and output. 

UV Sterilizers

UV water sterilizers also need cartridge filters for similar reasons. While ultraviolet water treatment process works in killing the DNA of biological organisms via UV rays, leaving them incapable of growing and spreading, it can be easily disrupted. The occurrence of turbidity produces a cloudy texture which increases obscurity among the organisms and allows bacteria to remain hidden behind concentrations of sediments and particles, making them more difficult for the UV rays to penetrate. It is advised that a cartridge filter consisting of 5 microns is ideal to ensure optimal performance of your UV system. 

Extending Life of Carbon Filters

Carbon filters work well in eliminating chlorine and chloramines, and are also capable of filtering chlorine and chloramines. However, unlike sediment cartridge filters, they are susceptible to being clogged up by these dirty substances which rapidly wears out the filter media. If carbon filters are given the task to remove high levels of particles, then their performance and life-usage will be significantly diminished. Essentially, cartridge filters are much less costly to replace than carbon filters so it would be wise for your budget to make the steps that extend the life of your carbon filter. 

Ideal micron-size of your water filter cartridges?

A micron is an acronym for micrometer, which is defined as one-millionth of a meter. Microns are used to determine the particle size that a certain filter is capable of filtering.  A rating system is used to identify the exact number of microns that will be required for the filter to achieve desired results depending on the size of sediments needing to be eliminated from your water source.

Scheduling replacements of your cartridge filter

Replacements of your cartridge filters should occur about once every six months to one year. Although keeping an eye on your water pressure is the ideal course of action to take in order to truly know when it is time for a replacement. As users notice a pressure drop, then steps should be taken to change sediment filters. Once the filter has filtered enough substances, it's holding capacity has met its threshold, and the water will begin having trouble flowing through the filter with the same flow rate, leading to a pressure drop. If you choose not to alternate it then your sediment filter will ultimately be unable to operate due to excessive clogging.
