What is Deionized Water
Posted by Pure Aqua, Inc. on Jul 6th 2021
This article provides details for those who are familiar with the process of deionization but aren't certain of the exact meaning of the term. Continue reading for explanations to your deionized water problems, along with precise definitions of numerous core terms.
What Is Deionized Water?
Deionized water (demineralized water or "DI water") is considered to be water that consists of zero charged particles called ions. Ions contain positive (cations) or negative (anions) electrical charges. Dissolved solids are an accumulation of both of these ions and make up a large portion of the pollutants in water. These pollutants are efficiently separated from the water as it passes through the deionized system, resulting in clean, purified water.
Water travels through two kinds of ion-exchange resin, which replace positively and negatively charged particles with hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions.
Theoretically, the deionization process can eliminate all remnants of salt from water. In fact, deionized water can also be free of potentially dangerous elements such as viruses, germs, and organic matter. DI water systems softens the water by removing the ionized particles, sodium, and replacing them with hydrogen.
What Is Deionized Water Used For?
Deionized water is utilized in a variety of manufacturing processes, as well as the pharmaceutical, laboratories, power plants, etc. For these sectors, highly pure water is critical since it is free of pollutants that could interfere with production processes. DI water is mostly used in the commercial sector.
Benefits of Deionized Water
Many factories and manufacturing plants consider deionized water as the most preferred choice to reduce salt accumulation on machinery.
In an industrial environment, deionized water can be used for cooling and lubricating equipment, among other things.
Textiles, medical clinics, and food processing plants also see massive benefits from utilizing deionized water.
A good water deionizer system is very good in design, because it will still operate efficiently even if the feed water characteristics change.
What Is Demineralization?
Demineralization is the removal of all ions from water in relation to water treatment. DI water is produced through the process of demineralizing virtually all inorganic salts from water using ion exchange or electrodeionization. The demineralization process is utilized for chemical operations as the minerals contained may conflict with the other compounds. As such, all beauty and cleansing products must be manufactured with demineralized or DI water.
