Data Center RO System Design
A reverse osmosis system for a data center should be designed around more than just the required flow rate. Feed-water quality, cooling tower makeup demand, RO recovery, treated-water storage, redundancy, automation, and future expansion should all be considered to ensure reliable operation.
A typical treatment process may include:
Source Water → Pretreatment → Cartridge Filtration → Reverse Osmosis → Treated Water Storage → Cooling Tower Makeup
Key Design Considerations
Water Quality
A complete water analysis should be reviewed for TDS, hardness, alkalinity, silica, chloride, sulfate, pH, turbidity, iron, manganese, chlorine, and temperature. These parameters help determine pretreatment, membrane selection, chemical dosing, and practical RO recovery.
System Capacity
RO capacity should consider both average and peak cooling tower makeup demand. Treated-water storage can provide a buffer between RO production and changing cooling loads.
Pretreatment
Depending on the source water, pretreatment may include media filtration, water softening, ultrafiltration, dechlorination, antiscalant dosing, and cartridge filtration to protect the RO membranes.
RO Recovery
Recovery should be established from the actual feed-water chemistry and membrane projection. Increasing recovery reduces concentrate volume but may increase membrane scaling potential.
Redundancy
Mission-critical data centers should consider N+1 or 2 × 100% redundancy. Pumps, pretreatment, controls, and distribution equipment should also be evaluated to avoid single points of failure.
Storage & Distribution
A treated-water tank provides reserve capacity during maintenance, membrane flushing, equipment shutdown, or sudden increases in cooling demand.
Automation
PLC/HMI controls can monitor pressures, flows, conductivity, tank levels, RO recovery, chemical dosing, alarms, and system status. Integration with the facility BMS can also be provided where required.
Water Recovery & Reuse
For facilities seeking to reduce freshwater consumption, cooling tower blowdown can potentially be treated through pretreatment and RO, with recovered permeate returned to the cooling makeup system.
Information Required for RO Design
To properly size a data center RO system, provide the water analysis, average and peak makeup flow, cooling tower capacity, required product-water quality, blowdown flow, operating hours, redundancy requirement, electrical supply, available space, and future expansion plans.
This allows the treatment system to be designed as part of the complete cooling-water infrastructure rather than as an isolated RO unit.
