Water Treatment Systems for Data Centers & AI Infrastructure
Water treatment is becoming increasingly important for modern data centers and AI infrastructure because high-density computing generates substantial heat that must be removed continuously. Where evaporative or water-based cooling is used, makeup-water quality can directly affect cooling-system efficiency, reliability and overall water consumption.
Dissolved minerals, hardness, silica, suspended solids, chlorides and other contaminants may contribute to scale, corrosion, fouling and increased cooling-tower blowdown. Properly engineered treatment helps control these conditions before water enters critical cooling equipment.
Pure Aqua designs and manufactures complete industrial water treatment systems for data centers and AI facilities, including pretreatment, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, water softening, cartridge filtration, chemical conditioning, blowdown recovery and water reuse.
Reverse Osmosis for Data Center Cooling
Reverse osmosis reduces dissolved salts and mineral loading in cooling-tower makeup water. Lower-mineral makeup water provides greater control over cooling-water chemistry and may support higher cycles of concentration, depending on source-water chemistry, cooling-system design and the treatment program.
RO can also be incorporated into cooling-tower blowdown recovery. With appropriate pretreatment, blowdown can be processed through reverse osmosis and suitable recovered permeate reused as cooling makeup or for another facility application.

Why Water Quality Matters
In evaporative cooling systems, water evaporates while dissolved minerals remain behind and become increasingly concentrated. Effective water treatment helps control the conditions that can interfere with cooling performance.
Scale
Mineral deposits can accumulate on heat-transfer surfaces and reduce thermal efficiency.
Corrosion
Improper water chemistry may contribute to corrosion of piping, heat exchangers and related cooling equipment.
Fouling
Suspended solids and deposits can interfere with water flow and heat-transfer performance.
Blowdown
Concentrated cooling water must be discharged and replaced with fresh makeup water.
Complete Water Treatment for Data Center Cooling
Treatment is engineered around the source-water quality, cooling demand, desired cycles of concentration, redundancy requirements and water-reuse objectives.
RO Makeup Treatment + Blowdown Recovery
Two complementary strategies can help data centers improve cooling-water quality and reduce freshwater demand.
01 — RO for Cooling Tower Makeup
Reverse osmosis removes a high percentage of dissolved salts before the water enters the cooling system.
✓ Reduced mineral loading ✓ Improved control of scale potential ✓ More consistent makeup-water quality ✓ Potential for higher cycles of concentration ✓ Potential reduction in cooling-tower blowdown02 — Cooling Tower Blowdown Recovery
Cooling-tower blowdown can be treated using appropriate pretreatment and reverse osmosis to recover suitable water.
✓ Recover reusable water ✓ Return suitable permeate to cooling makeup ✓ Reduce freshwater demand ✓ Reduce wastewater discharge ✓ Support water-efficiency objectivesBetter Water Management Can Reduce Water Loss
The U.S. Department of Energy notes that increasing cooling-tower cycles of concentration from 3 to 6 can significantly reduce both makeup-water demand and blowdown.
DOE example. Actual achievable cycles and water savings depend on source-water chemistry, cooling-system design, operating conditions and the facility treatment program.

REQUEST A QUOTE CONTACT AN ENGINEERData Center Water Treatment FAQ
Data centers using water-based or evaporative cooling may require water treatment to control dissolved minerals, suspended solids, scale potential, corrosion and other water-quality conditions that can affect cooling equipment.
Do data centers use reverse osmosis?Yes. Reverse osmosis may be used for cooling-tower makeup, reclaimed-water treatment, high-purity water applications and cooling-tower blowdown recovery.
Can cooling-tower blowdown be reused? In suitable applications, blowdown may be treated using pretreatment and reverse osmosis. The recovered permeate can potentially be reused as cooling makeup or for another appropriate facility application.
Can RO reduce cooling-tower water consumption?RO can reduce mineral loading in cooling makeup and may support operation at higher cycles of concentration. It can also be incorporated into blowdown-recovery systems. Actual water savings depend on site-specific conditions.
What information does Pure Aqua need to size the system?Key information includes source-water analysis, cooling makeup flow, cooling-system information, cycles of concentration, blowdown flow, reuse objectives, operating schedule, electrical supply and redundancy requirements.
