How Much Water Do Data Centers Use? AI Cooling & Water Consumption Explained
The rapid expansion of cloud computing and artificial intelligence is increasing the amount of computing infrastructure installed in data centers around the world. High-density servers, GPUs and other computing equipment generate substantial heat, making reliable cooling an essential part of data center operation.
For facilities that use evaporative cooling towers, water can play an important role in removing this heat. However, there is no single answer to the question “How much water does a data center use?”
Water consumption depends on many factors, including the size and IT load of the facility, cooling technology, climate, operating conditions, source-water quality, cycles of concentration and the facility's water management strategy.
Understanding these factors is the first step toward designing a more water-efficient data center.
