The variable area flow meter is used in industrial applications to monitor vapor flow rates. A funnel and float make up the variable area flow meter. The float's fluctuation to changes in the rate of flow is very straightforward.
Variable area flow meters are also designed to allow for significantly more versatility. There is a fairly large measuring area, plus higher pressure during operation that makes this flow meter desirable. It's easy to set up and manage.
Variable Area Flow Meter: Operational Principles
The variable area approach governs the functioning of the meter: fluid flow lifts a float in a tapered tube, increasing the area available for fluid passage. The float is lifted higher as the flow increases. The flowrate is related to the elevation of the float. The float is increased in liquids by a mixture of the liquid's buoyancy and the fluid's velocity head. With gases, buoyancy is almost non-existent, and the float reacts solely to the velocity head. The fluid flowrate and the annular area between the float and the tube wall determine how far the float goes up or down in the tube.
This equilibrium of pressure is thrown off by a change in the rate of flow. The float then changes direction until it gets to a point in which the conditions are balanced once more. For each steady flowrate, the variable area flow meter float adopts an unique place to fulfill the power formula. Variable area flow meter, on the other hand, must be vertically orientated and installed because the float position is gravity dependant.
