DECOMPOSITION

The break down of organic matter by bacteria and fungi, to change the chemical structure and physical appearance of matter. Decomposition works by making these organic substances such as earthworms into smaller parts during the decay process. As these compounds are reduced in size, plants are better able to absorb them, which helps to complete their cycle. Some organic matter are broken down differently, like fungi and bacteria, that are both referred to as saprophytic due to the manner in which they are broken down during the decomposition process.
