EUTROPHIC

Referring to water that is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous. Eutrophication is depicted as when there is an overabundance of algae and plants as a result of a greater availability of one or multiple numbers of hampering growth factors required for photosynthesis, such as nutrient fertilizers, sunlight or carbon dioxide. When this occurs during the eutrophication process there are structural changes to the ecosystem due to the nutrient salts that arise from enriched water and creates effects, including:

  • Reduction in aquatic species
  • Greater production of aquatic plants and algae
  • Lower quality of water
