Water Concern: Water bottling is the process of packaging drinking water for future use. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is used as a measure of the overall quality of the water. High accounts of TDS reflect the number of contaminants in the water by providing a count of ions present in parts per million (PPM). Among these contaminants can include toxic ions and minerals that are harmful to consume. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set 500 PPM TDS as the maximum level allowed for human consumption. The source of water this customer is using contains 5,000 PPM TDS; therefore, the levels must be reduced to abide by the EPA regulation. In addition, elevated TDS levels influence the taste of the water. The combination of certain elements along with potent elements can induce a bitter or metallic taste and repulse consumers. For these reasons, a thorough purification is required to provide ultra-pure and safe drinking water.

Applied Solution: This industrial reverse osmosis machine was recommended to treat well water for TDS reduction. The industrial RO system is comprised of a multistage process. It begins with pre-treatment to lower the downstream of bio-fouling potential through prechlorination. A feed pump is then provided to pressurize the water into Multi-Media Filters. This step reduces the suspended solids and removes turbidity from the water. Next, a dechlorination system is implemented prior to the membranes. In addition, antiscalant dosing is injected into the feed stream and is required to reduce the scaling potential of the membranes. Lastly, the water is pressurized through the reverse osmosis membranes. This process produces two streams, a permeate purified stream and a reject stream containing the concentrate of contaminants. This particular system was designed to produce 300 m3/day and reduce the TDS level from 5,000 PPM to less than 100 PPM TDS.
