NITRIFICATION

A biological process, during which nitrifying bacteria convert toxic ammonia to less harmful nitrate. There are two steps that executes the nitrification process, and the first step consists of ammonia oxidizing to the nitrite and the second step is the nitrite oxidizing to the nitrite. It is commonly used to remove nitrogen substances from wastewater, but in lakes and ponds it occurs naturally. Nitrification Results from an overabundance of nitrogen with the appearance of ammonia. THe reason for this is due to ammonia being the main substrate within the process of nitrification. Natural processes are responsible for these elements being found along with water supplies.
