HEAVY WATER

Water in which all the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by deuterium. While heavy water is mainly as a medium in nuclear reactors, it is not considered radioactive. For this reason, if heavy water is consumed then radiation poisoning should be of no concern. However, it is not the safest choice for drinking as a result of the biochemical reactions in human cells that are vulnerable to the different hydrogen atoms and they way they form hydrogen bonds.
