Water Challenges: Cruise ships have little options to produce fresh drinking water supplies for themselves other than packing containers of water before sailing offshore. Water treatment systems such as reverse osmosis has aided freshwater production efforts for cruise lines through the conversion of seawater into drinking water. An industrial seawater RO system is designed to eliminate enormous quantities of salt and other contaminants from seawater using a technology called reverse osmosis. The reverse osmosis technology consists of using a high pressure pump which exerts extreme pressure to salty water, pushing it through semi-permeable membranes while rejecting salts and other contaminants from going through. The amount of pressure that needs to be applied relies on the ocean’s specific TDS and temperature. The RO membranes are specifically built to remove particulates while dividing the feed water between purified water and rejected concentrated salts. The salts and other contaminants are discarded into the brine stream then flushed into a drain. Finally, purified water with 99% less dissolved salts comes out on the permeate side and is ready to be collected.



Applied Solution: This industrial seawater RO system is headed to a cruise line in the Fiji Islands. The system includes pre-treatment comprised of a chemical dosing system (pre-& post chlorination) and multimedia filtration followed by the reverse osmosis system with an operating pressure of 800 PSI and a recovery rate of 25%. The entire system is controlled by an advanced microprocessor. The SW-11K-1380 system was selected from our SWI Series to produce 11,000 GPD at a maximum 36,000 PPM feed water TDS from seawater feed source and is controlled by an advanced microprocessor.
