There are two different types of chemicals that are used to clean membranes, depending on what kind of fouling the membrane is experiencing. Acid cleaning is designed to eliminate mineral, metal, and generally inorganic fouling. The acid cleaning solution has a pH of 2, so it should only be handled with the utmost care. Alkaline cleaning is designed for removing bacteria, silica deposits, and generally organic fouling. The alkaline cleaning solution has a pH of 12, so it also should only be handled with the utmost care. If you see the performance of your reverse osmosis system falter by ten percent or more (an increase in pressure or a decrease in production), then cleaning may be necessary to restore nominal operating conditions.

Water Challenges: As membranes are vulnerable to silica scaling within the water, it has a detrimental effect on the membranes. The membranes require high purity, which means no occurrence of scaling, in order to purify thousands or even hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a day. The presence of contaminants may begin to create fouling in the membrane, harming its effectiveness to purify or induce it to cease operation entirely. When this occurs, then the chances of producing fresh, purified water becomes very low and threatens the performance of the entire industrial or commercial application.
